Reading practice gets a friendly audience in Rockridge this Thursday.

From 4:00 to 5:00 pm at Oakland Public Library: Rockridge Branch, young readers can sit down and read aloud to a very patient listener with paws.

The Rockridge Branch has that easy neighborhood library feel, tucked right on College Ave, with families coming in after school, kids browsing the shelves, and the Children’s Reference Desk keeping things moving. It is a calm place to practice, which helps when reading out loud still feels a little new.

Each reader gets a turn with one of the visiting dogs who rotate through the program: Finn, Gladys, or Christina. The dogs are there to listen, not judge, which is kind of the whole point. New readers can slow down, sound things out, and build confidence. More comfortable readers can enjoy sharing a story with a quiet furry friend.

Drop by Thursday afternoon and check in at the Children’s Reference Desk to sign up for a turn. The library is at 5366 College Ave in Oakland.

It is a simple, sweet hour for kids who like books, dogs, or both.

Did you know that some dogs love to listen when new or experienced readers practice reading aloud?

Each person will have a turn reading aloud to one of the three dogs who alternate coming to Rockridge to help you practice reading; Finn, Gladys, or Christina.

Drop by on Thursday afternoons, check in at the Children’s Reference Desk to sign up for your turn.
