Vonnegut talk at Books Inc. in Alameda

Park Street is a good place for a book club night, especially at Books Inc.. The store has that easy Alameda feel, with shelves close by, regulars wandering in, and enough calm to make a real conversation possible.

On Wednesday, July 8, the To the Moon & Back Sci Fi and Fantasy Book Club gathers to talk about Kurt Vonnegut’s God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. The main act here is the conversation, with Eliot Rosewater, Kilgore Trout, and Vonnegut’s sharp sense of humor giving readers plenty to work with.

This is a good pick if you like your fiction funny, strange, and a little uncomfortable in the best way. The book takes on money, charity, ego, and human messiness without getting stiff about it.

Come if you have read the whole thing. Come if you are almost done and want to hear how others read it. Either way, it is a nice excuse to spend an evening with local readers in one of Alameda’s most familiar bookstore corners.

Check the event page before you head over, since the calendar listing does not show a posted start time.

This month, To the Moon & Back Sci Fi/ Fantasy book club will meet to discuss the book God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, or Pearls Before Swine.About God Bless You, Mr. RosewoodEliot Rosewater—drunk, volunteer fireman, and President of the fabulously rich Rosewater Foundation—is about to attempt a noble experiment with human nature . . . with a little help from writer Kilgore Trout. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is Kurt Vonnegut’s funniest satire, an etched-in-acid portrayal of the greed, hypocrisy, and follies of the flesh we are all heir to.
