Yoshi’s is a good room for a player like Kirk Whalum. The sound is close, the tables sit near the stage, and the Jack London waterfront gives the night an easy Oakland feel before you even walk inside.
Whalum has that warm sax tone people recognize right away. He has played across jazz, gospel, and soul, and he is a 12 time Grammy nominated artist with a long catalog behind him. If you know his work from Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” his solo records, or his gospel jazz sets, this is the kind of room where the small details come through.
This is a good pick for anyone who likes a seated show where the band can stretch out without the room getting too loud or messy. Dinner before the set, a drink at the table, and two hours of live sax in one of Oakland’s best known jazz rooms.
