A quiet Thursday with books, kids, and a good dog listener

On Thursday, September 17, Oakland Public Library: Rockridge Branch is hosting a sweet after school reading hour from 4 pm to 5 pm.

The setup is simple. Kids check in at the Children’s Reference Desk, sign up for a turn, and read aloud to one of the visiting dogs. Finn, Gladys, and Christina take turns coming by, so you may meet any one of these calm canine listeners.

The Rockridge Branch has that easy College Avenue library feel. It is warm, neighborhood centered, and usually just busy enough to feel alive without feeling loud. For a child who is working on reading, that matters. A dog does not rush, correct, or make a face. A dog just listens.

This is a nice pick for new readers, shy readers, and kids who already love books but want a different kind of audience. Parents can hang nearby, browse the shelves, and let the child have a low pressure moment with a book and a furry friend.
