A quiet Thursday with books and very patient dogs in Rockridge

On Thursday, September 3, the Rockridge Branch of Oakland Public Library is hosting a sweet reading hour for kids from 4 to 5 pm.

The idea is simple. Young readers get a turn reading aloud to a dog who is happy to sit, listen, and not correct every word. Finn, Gladys, and Christina take turns visiting the branch, so one of these calm canine listeners will be there for the afternoon.

The Rockridge library has that easy neighborhood feel, with families moving in and out, staff nearby, and the Children’s Reference Desk as the check in spot. It is a good setup for kids who are building confidence, practicing out loud, or just need a friendly reason to pick up a book.

No big stage here. The dogs are the performers, and their whole act is being gentle, patient, and fully present. That can make reading feel a lot less stressful.

Families can stop by the event page for details, then check in at the Children’s Reference Desk when they arrive to sign up for a turn.
