Read to a Dog

Quiet pages, wagging tails in Rockridge
Thursday, August 27, from 4 to 5 pm, Oakland Public Library: Rockridge Branch is making room for one of the gentlest reading practice setups around: kids reading aloud to a patient dog.
The College Ave branch has that familiar neighborhood library feel, with calm tables, helpful staff, and a children’s area where families can settle in without much fuss. Readers check in at the Children’s Reference Desk, then wait for a turn with whichever dog is visiting that afternoon. It might be Finn, Gladys, or Christina.
The dogs are the stars here. No correcting. No rushing. Just a furry listener who seems happy to hear the next page. For new readers, that can make reading aloud feel a lot less stressful. For kids who already like books, it is a sweet reason to spend an hour at the library.
This is a simple, low pressure stop for families in Rockridge, especially if you have a child who could use a little practice and a kind audience. Bring a book, or find one on the shelf when you get there.
