Read to a Dog
July 23, 2026 4:00 pm
Thursday, July 23, 4 pm to 5 pm at Oakland Public Library Rockridge Branch
The Rockridge Branch has that calm College Ave library feel, with families coming in, kids browsing shelves, and enough quiet to make reading feel easy. On Thursday afternoon, the children’s area gets a sweet visitor: one of three library dogs, Finn, Gladys, or Christina.
Young readers can sign up for a turn at the Children’s Reference Desk, then read aloud to a very patient dog. New readers get practice without pressure. More confident readers get a fun reason to share a story.
The dogs are the main attraction here. They listen, sit close, and make the whole thing feel relaxed. For kids who feel shy about reading out loud, that can make a real difference.
It runs from 4 pm to 5 pm at 5366 College Ave in Oakland. Stop in, check at the desk, and see which furry listener is on duty that day.
Did you know that some dogs love to listen when new or experienced readers practice reading aloud?
Each person will have a turn reading aloud to one of the three dogs who alternate coming to Rockridge to help you practice reading; Finn, Gladys, or Christina.
Drop by on Thursday afternoons, check in at the Children’s Reference Desk to sign up for your turn.
