Making Stories at Oakland Public Library: Rockridge Branch

Tuesday, October 13, from 3:30 to 5 pm, the Rockridge Branch is giving kids ages 8 to 12 a friendly after school spot to write, draw, and build stories their own way.

The room has that calm neighborhood library feel: tables to spread out on, shelves close by, and enough quiet to think without making the place feel too serious. It is a good setting for kids who like notebooks, comics, poems, little books, zines, or stories that start with one odd idea and grow from there.

The young writers are the performers here, especially when finished pieces get read aloud at a later celebration. Kids can work solo, team up with a friend, or join a small group. There may be a prompt, a drawing game, free writing time, or space to illustrate something already in progress.

Parents will like the easy setup. Drop in, no registration needed, and new members are welcome. Kids get to make something that feels theirs, and some stories may even be added to the library collection.

3:30 pm to 5 pm

Children ages 8 to 12 are invited to join us on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 3:30-5 pm to write, illustrate, make, and tell your own stories.
This is a workshop/club, where kids can work alone, in pairs, or in small groups to write and illustrate stories. Do a fun writing or drawing game, follow a prompt, free-write, or illustrate.
Create a book, a zine, a comic, a story, a kamishibai, a play, a poem, or whatever!
We’ll set a date for people who want to read aloud their finished stories and celebrate, and we welcome stories to be added into the library collection.
Drop in, no registration required. New members always welcome.
