Chess Club for Kids, Tweens, & Teens

Rockridge Branch is a nice spot for a quiet hour of chess. The library has that steady neighborhood feel, with books close by, tables ready, and College Avenue right outside if families want to make a small outing of it.

On Wednesday, August 12, from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, kids and teens can drop in to learn the basics, practice a few moves, or sit across from someone who knows the game well. Chess sets are provided, and instruction is part of the session, so beginners can feel comfortable.

The performers here are the players. A careful pause before a move. A quick grin after a good capture. A parent and child thinking through the same board. That is the fun of it.

This is best for ages 6 to 17, and all levels are welcome. Children under 8 need to be with a responsible caregiver. The library also tries to match players by age and skill, which helps keep the games friendly and useful.

If your young person likes puzzles, strategy, or just needs a calm place to meet other kids, this is a solid East Bay stop.

Drop by to learn the basics, practice with new or old friends, or play against a worthy opponent.
Instruction and chess sets will be provided.
All levels welcome. Best for people ages 6 to 17 years. (Children under 8 years old must be supervised by a responsible caregiver.) This is a great activity for intergenerational family pairs – otherwise we try to match people who are close in age & level.
