Tenant questions at the Main Library this August

If a notice from your landlord has been sitting on the counter, or your lease has one of those lines that makes you read it three times, the Oakland Main Library is hosting a useful Sunday stop on August 2.

From 3:00 to 4:30 pm, Community Counselors from the Oakland Tenants Union will be at the library to talk with Oakland renters about tenant rights. Bring your lease, notices, emails, photos, or any papers tied to the issue. The more context you have with you, the easier the conversation can be.

The Main Library at 125 14th Street has that familiar downtown Oakland feel: steady, public, and easy to settle into. People come through with books, kids, laptops, questions, and errands. For a clinic like this, that setting matters. It feels approachable, which helps when the topic is stressful.

The counselors are the main presence here. They are not attorneys, so they cannot give legal advice, but they can help you sort through questions and point you toward next steps. Rent increases, repairs, deposits, notices, and communication with a landlord are all the kind of issues people often bring.

The session is free and open to Oakland tenants. Appointments are encouraged by emailing or calling (510) 704 5276. Walk ins are accepted if there is room.

Since this clinic is scheduled for the first Sunday of the month, it is smart to call the Oakland Tenants Union before you go and confirm the details. You can also ask the library about accessibility information if you need it.
