Open Art Lab at Oakland Public Library
On Saturday, September 5, the Oakland Public Library opens up space for a mellow afternoon of making, fixing, cutting, stitching, and seeing what your neighbors are working on.
The Main Library at 125 14th Street has that classic downtown Oakland feel. Quiet corners, public tables, people coming through with a purpose, and just enough city energy outside to keep things moving. From 2:00 to 4:00 pm, the focus shifts to art projects and shared tools.
No stage lineup here. The performers, in a loose sense, are the makers in the room. Expect people using sewing machines, a serger, Cricut Maker supplies, button making tools, mats, basic needles, black and white thread, and other library provided gear.
Bring the parts that make your project yours. That might mean fabric, specialty thread, notions, cardstock, vinyl, or whatever material you have been meaning to use. Library staff and fellow creators can help if you get stuck, which is often the best part of a setup like this.
Popular machines will use an in person sign up system, with 30 minute sessions so everyone gets a fair turn. It is a good fit if you have a small project to finish, want to test a tool before buying one, or just need a reason to sit down and make something.
