A calm Friday stretch at Oakland Public Library

If your week has been full of screens, errands, and that steady Oakland hum, this hour at the Main Library might be a good reset.

On Friday, September 18, 2026, from 4 to 5 pm, Oakland Public Library hosts a beginner friendly yoga class at 125 14th St in downtown Oakland. The Main Library has that familiar civic feel, quiet corners, steady foot traffic, and a sense that everyone is welcome to settle in for a bit.

The class is led by Jaime, who has been practicing yoga since 2011 and brings a grounded, open style to the room. Expect a steady pace, basic poses, breath work, and space to figure things out without taking the whole thing too seriously.

This is a good fit if you are new to yoga, returning after a break, or already have a regular practice and want something simple and community based. Wear clothes you can move in, and bring a yoga mat plus a small blanket or bath towel. If you like using blocks, straps, or other supports, bring those too.

It is free library energy in the best way. Low pressure, local, and built around showing up as you are.

Come practice yoga! This class is designed for those new to yoga, as well as long-time practitioners. Accessibly paced, we will focus on the fundamentals of poses (asana), breathing, and being in community. This class is meant to ground students in their bodies, while not taking ourselves too seriously. Come as you are to the mat. Participants will need to wear comfortable clothing for movement and bring a yoga mat and small blanket (or bath towel), as well as any other supports they would like.

Jaime has been practicing yoga since 2011. The more she practices, the more she uncovers how much yoga has to offer in transforming a busy mind and in transforming one’s relation to the world. Jaime sees herself as a life-long learner whose teaching style is to hold space in class for others to explore their practice. Jaime completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training and has completed additional trainings on energetics and breath.
