Beyond D&D: roleplaying game night

Tabletop stories after work at Oakland Public Library

Oakland Public Library is hosting a roleplaying game night on Tuesday, August 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at 125 14th St. If your usual game has been feeling a little too familiar, this is a good excuse to try something new without having to buy books, prep a character, or talk your whole friend group into a new system.

The room should have that calm library feel, but with dice, character choices, and strangers quickly becoming party members. An experienced DM will guide the session, so beginners can settle in, and regular players can focus on the story instead of sorting out every rule.

This round is centered on Heart: The City Beneath, a dark and strange dungeon crawling game about risk, ambition, and what characters are willing to lose while chasing what they want. Expect shared storytelling, problem solving, and a table that depends on everyone showing up ready to play together.

All materials are provided. Drop ins are welcome, though space may be limited. The library asks players to arrive on time and plan to stay for the full session. This one is for adults 18 and up, and masks are appreciated and available.

If you like games with mood, choices, and a bit of weird underground danger, this is a solid Tuesday evening plan in downtown Oakland.
