Beyond D&D: roleplaying game night brings a different kind of tabletop evening to the Oakland Public Library on Tuesday, July 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

The Main Library has a good setting for this kind of thing. It is calm, public, and easy to settle into after work or a long day downtown. Instead of a noisy bar table or a crowded shop corner, you get a room where people can actually hear each other think, make choices, and tell a strange story together.

This session is for adults who want to try tabletop games outside the usual D&D lane. The current game is Heart: The City Beneath, a dark, story focused RPG about people chasing their dreams through a dangerous world below the surface. It is about risk, strange places, bad choices, and what characters are willing to lose along the way.

The evening is led by an experienced DM, with players becoming the cast around the table. Beginners are welcome, and seasoned players should find plenty to chew on too. All materials are provided, so you do not need to show up with books, dice, or a folder full of character notes.

A few things are worth knowing before you go. Drop in is okay, but space may be limited. The library asks that players arrive on time, be ready to meet new people, and plan to stay for the full session. Masks are appreciated and will be available.

If you have been meaning to try a new tabletop system, this is a friendly way to do it without buying anything first. Just bring a good attitude and a little patience for shared storytelling.

Currently playing: Heart: The City Beneath

A dungeon-crawling, story-forward tabletop RPG from the designers of Spire that focuses on what characters have to lose in pursuit of their dreams in the chaotic darkness beneath the world. Heart expands the unreal world beneath Spire. It uses an expanded and updated version of the Resistance system, the mechanics that power Spire, to help you tell stories of desperation, hubris and adventure in the City Beneath.
