Local Economy is the kind of Oakland spot that makes sense for a zine night: close, casual, and built for people to gather without much fuss. On Wednesday evening, the room will hold readings, conversation, and a new anthology centered on queer and trans experiences with hysterectomy.
The zine brings together personal essays, poetry, and art about medical care, surgical choice, community help, sex, desire, loss, and recovery. It was co edited by East Bay writers Hanne Williams Baron and Adrian Matias Bell, and it looks at a subject that is often talked about too broadly, or not talked about at all.
Readers for the night include Tiara Amar, Eli Sachse, Nico Hooper, E. Wilson, Jude Allard, Julianne Clark, Finn Sonder, Adrian Matias Bell, and Hanne Williams Baron.
People may want to go for the writing, the local queer and trans community space, or the chance to hear stories that usually stay private. Copies of the zine will be available for purchase, and there will be light refreshments.
A note for planning: the evening includes personal stories about surgery, sex, medical systems, and grief, so it may be better suited for adult audiences.

The Queer Trans Hysto Zine encompasses stories from trans and queer people across and outside the U.S. as they reflect on the medical system and barriers to good care, the joy and heartbreak of community aid, surgical autonomy, sex and desire, and ambiguous loss.
Co-edited by East Bay writers Hanne Williams-Baron and Adrian Matias Bell, the zine was borne from a desire for nuanced hysterectomy media by and for queer and trans people. This event features personal narratives that may not be suitable for younger audiences.
Contributions include a how-to guide on navigating early menopause, a manifesto on surgery as a tool for self-creation, diary entries and recovery ephemera, decades-long reflections on transition, and more.
