A quiet, useful afternoon for caregivers in Oakland

On Sunday, September 27, Local Economy in Oakland is hosting a three hour workshop for anyone caring for an aging parent, a sick partner, a friend, or another loved one. It also makes sense for people who know caregiving may be part of their future and want to feel less alone when that time comes.

The room should have more of a community circle feel than a classroom vibe. Local Economy is the kind of Oakland space that fits this subject well, grounded, local, and centered on people talking honestly with each other.

Roy Remer, Executive Director of Zen Caregiving Project, will lead the afternoon with Tracy Tingle, an end of life doula and Zen Caregiving Project volunteer. They will bring teaching, guided meditation, and group dialogue, with ideas drawn from Roy’s book Zen Caregiving: Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others.

The focus is simple and needed: how to stay present, how to make room for compassion, how to sit with change, and how to notice gratitude even when care feels heavy.

If caregiving has been taking up space in your life, this could be a steady place to pause for a few hours. No big production. Just guidance, practice, and a room of people who understand why the topic matters.

When: Sunday, September 27, 2026, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

In this workshop, participants will find support and guidance for navigating the emotional challenges of caring for loved ones who are aging, living with long-term chronic or terminal illness, or approaching the end of life. Whether you are currently in this role or simply want scaffolding for future scenarios, the afternoon will provide a mix of teaching, guided meditation, and group dialogue, facilitated by two leaders with deep experience in mindfulness-based caregiving.
Roy Remer, Executive Director of Zen Caregiving Project (formerly Zen Hospice Project) and Tracy Tingle, end-of-life Doula and Zen Caregiving Project volunteer, will structure the workshop around Roy’s recently released book, Zen Caregiving: Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others. Together, we will learn about and practice present moment awareness, compassion, impermanence, and gratitude.
