West Oakland has a good one for anyone who likes seeing a wide slice of local art in one place. GearBox Gallery is bringing together 39 Northern California artists for a group show running from August 20 through September 19, 2026.
The gallery sits on West Grand, in that part of Oakland where studio energy and warehouse bones still shape the feel of the block. Inside, GearBox has the kind of room where you can slow down, get close to the work, and actually spend time with each piece without feeling rushed.
The show was selected by 2026 guest juror Demetri Broxton, and the artist list covers a lot of ground. Expect work from Amy Ahlstrom, Irman Arcibal, Joy Broom, Anthony Chavez, Diane Che, Vibrata Chromodoris, Jeff Ellis, April Ford, Rachel Katz, Brett Kaufman, Monika Mayer, Mokhtar Paki, Matthew Felix Sun, Jun Yan, and many more.
That mix is the draw here. Painting, mixed media, and other approaches sit side by side, giving a clear look at what artists around Northern California are making right now. If you like gallery visits that feel varied and personal, this is worth putting on your calendar.
The opening reception is Saturday, August 22 from 1 to 4 pm. That is usually the best time to catch the room with a little extra buzz, meet artists, and talk through the work with other people seeing it fresh.
There is also a juror talk with Demetri Broxton on Saturday, September 19 at 2 pm, which should add good context to how the show came together and why these artists were selected.
